Dawsonville was established in 1857 as the county seat of newly constituted Dawson County, and as a town in 1859, and a city in 1952. Both the town and county are named after state senator William Crosby Dawson. Dawsonville is situated in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains. Dawsonville is about an hour and a half north of Atlanta. It is fast becoming a favorite destination for those looking to get away from the city. With quick access to Cumming, Gainesville, and Dahlonega, Dawsonville is surprisingly convenient. The Appalachian Trail begins at Dawsonville, as do Amicalola Falls- the tallest waterfall in the east of Mississippi- the Chattahoochee National Forest, the Etowah and Amicalola Rivers, and even parts of Lake Lanier. It's no surprise that people are fleeing the city for this idyllic location.
